The Senate has voted to confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor as the first Hispanic to sit on the Supreme Court, The D.C. Writeup has learned. Though about 30 Senators have yet to vote, Sotomayor has already received the 50 votes necessary for her confirmation.
C-Span predicts that when the final vote tally comes in, Sotomayor will have received 68 votes for and 31 votes against with one Senator not voting. So far, eight Republican Senators have voted for Sotomayor: Senator Voinovich (R-OH), Senator Bond (R-MO), Senator Graham (R-NC), Collins (R-ME), Senator Snowe (R-ME), Senator Martinez (R-FL), Senator Lugar (R-IN), and Senator Alexander (R-TN).
The confirmation gives the Obama administration a much needed victory in light falling approval rates.
Sotomayor will take her seat on the court in early September when the court reconvenes for a rare out-of-session hearing on a campaign finance case. Her first full session on the court will begin on October 4th.
