The visionary “Lion of the Senate,” Mass. Sen. Ted Kennedy, died overnight at the senseless age of 77. The death comes soon after the August 11 death of his sister, Euince Kennedy Shriver.
Shriver helped establish the Special Olympics or something, while Kennedy is best known for his active role in pushing for a variety of social causes for the poor, including civil rights legislation and universal health care.
Kennedy ascended to the Senate because of his last name but later proved himself a capable bipartisan politician who drew praise from high-ranking Republicans and Democrats alike. One of his speeches even murdered Robert Bork’s chance at winning a Supreme Court seat by accusing him of favoring segregation, a move widely regarded a classy high point in American politics.
But Kennedy’s presidential ambitions were put on indefinite hold after he committed actual homicide in 1969 by driving Mary Jo Kopechne, one of his brother’s campaign aids, off a bridge, where she soon drowned. Kennedy made no effort to contact authorities until the next morning, at which point she was even more drowned.
Proving that the media loves not only rich black pop stars who wish they were white, but also rich white politicians who wish they were black, all major networks plan to air non-stop coverage of Kennedy’s death for the next six weeks.
