Wisconsin State Rep. Jeff Fitzgerald has a short and sweet op-ed on the fiscal insanity sweeping our federal government and state houses.
The basic gist of it is that as the economy contracts, so do our pocketbooks. At least, that is, for regular people. Fitzgerald notes that government has defied common sense and done the exact opposite, sponsoring large increases in spending.
A regular individual, without the power of the government, who tries to live outside their means is eventually going to come crashing back down to earth. The current recession is a partially a result of irresponsible spending by state and federal governments. So what do we do as the recession gets worse? We spend even more.
A lot of people are assuming (or is “hoping” a better way to phrase it) the recession will bottom out relatively soon, but if we continue to be this unserious about fiscal discipline the light at the end of the tunnel is going to get further and further away.
Update: I think this proves my point. God love ya Joe: “We’re going to go bankrupt as a nation,” Biden said. “Now, people when I say that look at me and say, ‘What are you talking about, Joe? You’re telling me we have to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt?’” Biden said. “The answer is yes, that’s what I’m telling you.”
