In what many pundits are calling the most monumental decision so far in his first term, President Obama has chosen Dr. Regina Benjamin of Alabama to be the next Surgeon General. Dr. Benjamin became well-known when she rebuilt a health clinic in Bayou La Batre, Ala. that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Did we mention she’s black? But wait, there’s more — Benjamin was the first black woman to head a state medical society, received the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights, and received a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant.” For more information on why Benjamin is eminently qualified for this position, click here.
For those who have forgotten, the Surgeon General has the important job of yelling at people who smoke cigarettes.
